David Blanchett, CFA, CFP®, AIFA – Head of Retirement Research, Morningstar

David Blanchett, CFA, CFP®, AIFA, is the head of retirement research for Morningstar Investment Management.

Passion/Expertise:

David is part of an up and coming group of retirement thought leaders – truly a breath of fresh air – along with Wade Pfau, Michael Finke and others, who challenge us to go beyond targeting 80% replacement rates, traditional retirement portfolio asset allocations, inflation-adjusted systematic withdrawals of 4% and probabilities of success or failure.

Position/Experience:

As the head of retirement research for Morningstar Investment Management, David works to enhance the group’s consulting and investment services. He conducts research primarily in the areas of financial planning, tax planning, annuities, and retirement plans and he serves as the Chairman of the Advice Methodologies Investment subcommittee.

David’s research has been published in a variety of academic and industry journals and has been featured in a variety of media publications. In 2014 Money Magazine named him one of the five brightest minds in retirement and in 2014 Investment News included him in their inaugural 40 under 40 list as a “visionary” for the financial planning industry.

David is a RetireMentor for MarketWatch and an Expert retirement panelist for the Wall Street Journal. His research won:

  • The Journal of Financial Planning’s 2007 Financial Frontiers Award,
  • The Retirement Income Industry Association’s 2012 Thought Leadership Award, and
  • the Journal of Financial Planning’s 2014 Montgomery-Warschauer Award.

Education:
David holds a master’s degree in financial services from the American College and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is currently taking classes toward a doctorate in personal financial planning at Texas Tech University.

Sandra Timmermann, EdD – Gerontologist, Successful Aging in Retirement Expert

Sandra Timmermann, EdD is a Doctor of Education and a nationally-recognized gerontologist with a focus on aging and its relation to business.

Passion/Expertise:

Sandy’s areas of expertise are focused on global demographic changes and on retirement life stage issues on subjects ranging from retirement finances, family needs and intergenerational relationships, housing and aging in place, employment, health and long-term care, and other transitional topics.

Position/Experience:

Sandy was the founder and Executive Director of the MetLife Mature Market Institute, which was disbanded in June 2013.. (This was a huge loss to the retirement industry – their LTC and other studies were of great use to the industry for education and product development purposes). The Institute was the company’s center of expertise, strategy, and thought leadership on the 50+ market, providing customer insights, content development, research, education, sales support, and visibility for MetLife and its business partners.

Prior to joining MetLife, Sandy held senior staff positions with several national aging organizations including the American Society on Aging, AARP and SeniorNet.

She has served in leadership capacities with a number of national organizations including the Board of Directors of the American Society on Aging, the Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Alliance for Caregiving and the Chair of the Business Forum on Aging.

Michael Falk, CFA, CRC®, is a consultant and partner with the Focus Consulting Group (and our resident retirement contrarian).

Michael is an engaging, creative asset management professional, and offers equally engaging presentations and materials on retirement topics, behavior, asset allocation research and portfolio development expertise.
The asset consulting perspective acknowledges that the wisdom of crowds can denigrate into madness at times. Assets should be managed with the serenity to accept the market’s realities; the courage to pursue its opportunities; and the ongoing pursuit of wisdom to understand the difference.

Michael’s background includes extensive asset allocation research and portfolio development expertise along with a multi-faceted understanding of behavioral finance and retirement issues.
Michael formerly was the Chief Strategist on a Global Macro fund as well as a CIO in charge of manager due diligence and asset allocation for a multi-billion dollar advisory, one of the first firms to provide managed accounts for reluctant 401(K) investors – those that can’t, or won’t, invest wisely themselves.

Michael has been a contributing member of the PDDARI group within the Financial Management Association (FMA), the Vice Chair of the Plan Sponsor Council of America’s Investment Committee, taught as an adjunct professor at DePaul University in their Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Certificate Program. Currently he is an approved speaker for the CFA Institute and teaches on behalf of the CFA Society of Chicago in their Claritas program, and is frequently quoted in the financial press. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Finance.
