NEW BOOK! Professor Jamie Hopkins released his new retirement income planning book in 2018, Rewirement: Rewiring The Way You Think About Retirement. American’s struggle with behavioral biases and misconceptions that hurts their retirement planning. In this new book, Jamie discusses how you can change the way you think about retirement. Income planning is very different from savings. People need to focus on risks like sequence of returns, inflation, and longevity. These risks really don’t present themselves until you hit the income phase.

Additionally, Jamie talks about useful debt management strategies and how to prioritize debt in retirement. Housing wealth is one of those areas. Mortgages can be a drain, but often are useful planning vehicles. With comparatively low cost to borrowing, reverse mortgages and traditional mortgages can be useful retirement income tools, which goes against what many people initially believe. Read more about Jamie Hopkins at Hopkins Retirement.

“You’ve been dutifully putting aside money—the earlier you start saving for retirement the better—but what about retirement income planning? How can you stretch your limited savings to last through the decades of your retirement? Retirement income planning is really a different beast than saving for retirement. It really takes a different mindset. However, switching mindsets from a saving to a spending mentality can be difficult due to a number of behavioral finance biases and misconceptions. The goal of this book is to help you overcome those behavioral finance issues to have a more successful financial future.”

Advance Care Planning: A Critical Component for Building Client Relationships – Paul Malley

Each day, 10,000 people turn 65. As the population ages, there are more life transitions to assist in helping clients navigate complex health and financial issues. An overlooked aspect of an advisor’s role is advance care planning – or defining, communicating and documenting healthcare wishes.

Currently, less than 30 percent of adults have an advance directive. This webinar will help advisors develop skills to begin and continue these difficult conversations, use advance care planning to build an outreach and education program, and provide a step-by-step guide on completing an advance directive.

How to Protect an Aging Client’s or Adult Child’s Retirement Security from a Medical Crisis – Annalee Kruger

Most parents want to age in place, so a medical crisis can put families into a tailspin if a plan is not in place ahead of time. Adult children who assume the role of caregiver must re-organize their business and personal lives to meet the needs of an aging loved one, as well as find funds to meet the unexpected health costs.

It is important for advisors to understand the needs typically associated with a medical event of an aging loved one, how it might affect the retirement security of the aging client and their adult children caregivers, and what can be done to help clients be financially and legally prepared.

Medicare 101 – The As, Bs, Cs, and Ds of Medicare – Erin Fisher

Whether a person is turning 65, working, not working or retiring after age 65, the maze of Medicare is a mixture of Federal Regulations, misinformation and unrelenting mailings from companies selling Medicare plans.

Making the wrong decision in Medicare enrollment or non-enrollment can include lifetime financial penalties. You can help your clients manage Medicare costs by referring them to resources to help them make informed decisions and better understanding how taxable investment income can affect their monthly premiums.

  • How to Maximize Social Security Benefits Now” discusses the new claiming rules authorized by the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 and reviews strategies for married couples, divorced spouses, surviving spouses and ex-spouses and single individuals.
  • The Broken Three Legged Stool” discusses the demise of pensions as a traditional element of retirement income and the need to include all sorts of assets beyond retirement accounts (such as home equity and continued employment) when creating a retirement income plan. It includes ways to maximize Social Security benefits under current rules.
  • The Ticking Tax Time Bomb” outlines the challenges of managing retirement income in the most tax-efficient manner and discusses the impact on retirement income on Medicare premiums.
  • Why Social Security is Crucial to Women – Women represent more than half of all Social Security benefits whether on their own earnings record or as a spouse, a caregiving spouse, an ex-spouse or a widow. Women and Retirement – Cindy Hounsell, Mary Beth Franklin, Shelley Giordano, Betty Meredith

By being retirement smart, we can help our women clients prepare ahead of time for the retirement-specific risks that are most likely to affect them.

In retirement, women are more at risk than men of living longer than expected, surviving a spouse, experiencing a “grey divorce”, being a caregiver, dealing with the long-term care expenses of a spouse, and eventually relying solely on Social Security for their retirement income.

“Women and Retirement” provides specifics about what planners should do to help their women clients be more retirement secure.
